It's all so fascinating: Or when you have way too many interests

In school as in life, we're told to focus. We are supposed to narrow down, select a major or a path of study and stick to it with determination and unwavering principle. This approach is entirely at odds with what drives me (as I'm sure is the case with others) yet I didn't even realize to very recently that I'm allowed to have this renaissance type of mindset. I'm type A to a tee, so I can play the follow these rules game in order to succeed. However, at odds with a sole selection comes my yearning to explore many areas, to delve into science, Latin American history, art theory, sociology, religion, and politics. I know everyone doesn't have the same thoughts or pull within, but I recognize the pattern and know each of my decisions in life has borne out of trying to support my varied and inquisitive nature.
In Human Design (I know, I would roll my eyes too if I were you), which takes astrology and mixes in the I-Ching and quantum physics, I'm a Manifesting Generator, (you can look up your "design" here). To boil down a quick take away, MG's (Manifesting Generator) are characterized for having a plethora of interests and passions as opposed to being exclusively interested and dedicated to one thing. While this seems simple it was quite revolutionary for me to discover. I've always loved learning and the pursuit of knowledge, but giving myself permission for the multitude of passions I hold makes my choice to study History absolutely comprehensible. Through studying History I was able to dissect how politics, economics, culture, and art shaped societies and influenced macro trends which allowed me to dive into all of these facets to a varying degree. I wouldn't be content only immersing myself in biology or literature, I needed to let my interests unravel across widely different topics.
Professionally, my career in Marketing & Advertising allowed me tap into creativity, visual and otherwise while analyzing systems, managing large scale projects and developing relationships with clients and colleagues. As much as I can geek out talking to an experience designer about interaction models or why a layout is entirely unintuitive, I thrive on sharing art blogs with designers and checking out short film projects or photographers. Non professionally I've worked as a DJ and I continue to be both inspired and intrigued by diverse music genres like during college when I sat in a radio station basement learning about the difference between No-Wave and the Seattle Punk Scene.
Some may call this multi-varied leaning dispersed or unfocused (at its worst), but I can't imagine it any other way. If you are like me, you have your own stories of how your numerous interests carve their way into your life and how you've accommodated for the countless places your mind and energy takes you. If on the other hand, you entirely see yourself in a different headspace, that of the intensely focused and highly specialized, hats off my friend. I am in awe of your unique ability to drill far down into a topic, a subject, a category. You are a specialist, submerging yourself into the thick of it and while those like me diverge and branch off. I am constantly feeling an inward inertia calling me to move in a different direction, many times multiple at the very same time.
